A lot The program director of the KDUV, FM 88.9 in Visalia, Calif, has seen crowds of listeners show up for a gospel concert in the park sponsored by the radio statioa The station broadcast live at a fast-food restaurant to raise money for a local family, and Croft heard words of praise for the efforts from a host of individuals. But the ratings provided by the national radio trends-monitoring company, Arbitron, show radio stations like KDUV, those with religious programming, don't attract as many listeners as radio stations with rock, talk or country formats. "Most Christians won't listen to Christian radio," said Croft.
"There are a million reasons why people don't listen to the format more. The industry has a well-deserved reputation for not being that good. Then there is the stigma The moment you say many people are turned off." Nationally, the popularity of radio stations with religious formats is growing but slowly. A 2002 report released by Arbitron reveals people who listened to religious radio stations during a five-year span went from 2.1 percent of the population in 1998 to 2.6 percent in 2002. Despite the slow growth, religious radio has a long way to go to match the success of nonreli-gious formats.
The number of radio listeners who choose a religious station is just one-eighth the number of people who listen to the top-rated format of newstalk radio. The religious radio format trails newstalk, adult contemporary, country and rock, formats by a large margin. These four formats, however, saw a drop in the percentage of listeners "during the same five-year period. Some station managers say it isn't fair to compare Christian and non-Christian radio stations. "How we rate our success is by how long a program stays on the air," said Tony Donato, general manager of KBIF and KARV in Fresno, Calif.
Both KBIF and KARV feature evangelistic and teaching programs that are supported by donations from listeners and the sale of merchandise. This interactive programming provides an immediate measure of how many people are listening. "The Wings of Faith With Pastor Vester East," for example, has aired on KBIF for more than 25 years because listeners have continued to fund the program. East's radio show is the traditional evangelistic program that defined the religious radio format until the early 1990s. messages outside the confines of their worship centers. When there was music, it was standard gospel tunes straight out of hymnals. Today's religious radio formats are far more varied. Some focus on preaching and instructional programming, such as Annie Lett-Dixon's "Spreading the Word," which airs Sundays on KBIF. Other radio stations with religious formats concentrate more on the variety of musical formats that fall under the gospel heading.
Contemporary Christian is music with a message of faith that can be pop, heavy metal or even rap. Christian rock offers the same message, but through rock and alternative music formats.
