After missing most of the NBA playoffs with a calf injury, Kristaps Porzingis showed just how valuable he is to an already stacked franchise. The Unicorn returned for a dominating first quarter to help set the tone for the Celtics as they cruised past the Dallas Mavericks, 107-89, in Game 1 of the NBA Finals.

Porzingis accumulated 20 points, six rebounds and three blocks off the bench, helping Boston roar out to a 37-20 lead in the opening frame. The hot start quickly diminished any questions of a slow transition back into the fold from the 7-footer, who had not played since April 29.

Porzingis later admitted he received a jolt of energy from the home crowd when he checked into the game with 7:17 left in the first quarter.

Despite a 10-day rest, Boston looked in prime form as Eastern Conference Finals MVP Jaylen Brown added 22 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists while All-Star Jayson Tatum finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Derrick White chipped in 15 points.

After Dallas led 15-14 with 6:38 left in the first quarter, the Celtics floored it for a 44-16 cruise. Over the final 5:24 of the first quarter, Porzingis went 4 for 5 from the field with 11 points, two blocked shots and three rebounds. He finished the half with 18 points on 7 of 9 shooting.

After the stellar impact, questions have been raised whether Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla will tinker with starting Porzingis in Game 2.

With everything coming up green, the Celtics’ lead ballooned to 29 points in the first half.

That’s when Dallas tried to make their move. The Mavericks cut it down to eight in the third quarter with a 35-14 run, including 15 points by Doncic, cutting the Celtics’ lead to 72-64. Boston responded with an overwhelming 14-0 run.

Boston is 54-9 this season when giving up fewer than 117.9 points per game.

The Celtics, who led the league in 3-pointers made per game this season, went 16 of 42 (38.1%) from deep while the Mavericks mustered 7 of 27 (25.9%) from beyond the arc. The Celtics hit seven 3s in the opening quarter.

Slovenian superstar Luka Doncic tallied 30 points and 10 rebounds, but had just one assist. In fact, the Mavericks backcourt of Kyrie Irving and Doncic combined for just three assists. Dallas had five assists through three quarters, marking the lowest number assists any team has had in any NBA game in the last three seasons.

Dallas finished with nine assists on 35 field goals while Boston racked up 23 assists on 39 buckets.

P.J. Washington chipped in 14 points and eight rebounds while Irving struggled through a 12-point performance on 6 of 19 from the field while fending off a splattering of boos. Irving went 5 of 11 on mixed shots of midrange jumpers and contested paint floaters. He was 0 of 5 from beyond the arc.

Dallas’ perimeter defense struggled to keep the Celtics in check. The versatile challenges Boston presents, especially Porzingis, seems to indicate it could be a tall task for those who shined inside in the previous series like Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively II. Offensively, they were thrown off the track, not able to instill their patented lob dunks that had wrecked Western Conference foes throughout this playoff run.

It’s familiar territory for the Mavericks, who have dropped three of their four Game 1′s this postseason. Adjustments are the name of the game on this stage. What will Mavericks coach Jason Kidd have in store to answer the Celtics multifaceted arsenal?
