  • State Farm is our best overall choice for its low rates and great customer service.

  • NJM is a regional insurer but has excellent ratings and affordable rates.

  • American Family has more than 18 discounts that can help lower premiums.

The cheapest car insurance doesn’t always equal the best car insurance. Finding the right auto insurance means considering your lifestyle, driving habits, coverage needs, and budget, but these insurers show it’s possible to find low rates without sacrificing quality.

Finding the best car insurance company for you can be time-consuming, but comparing rates will always help you find the best fit. Insurify analyzed 155 insurance companies, considered 19 data points on factors like financial strength, customer satisfaction, and affordability, and chose our top seven so you know where to start as you’re looking for coverage.

Best car insurance companies

The best insurance company for you depends on your needs, but we prioritized a quality customer experience and affordable premiums. Our editorial team reviewed company complaint information, customer satisfaction rates, financial strength, and availability. Affordability strongly factors into our analysis, so these insurers also have competitive average rates below the monthly national averages of $105 for liability-only and $214 for full-coverage car insurance.

  • Our editorial team spent more than 350 hours developing the Insurify Quality (IQ) Score and scoring insurance companies. The IQ Score objectively analyzes and calculates a score for insurers using more than 15 crucial criteria. The team weighted criteria by importance to the consumer — factors such as customer reviews and affordability influence the score more than availability and third-party ratings.

We rate each company on a 1-to-5 scale based on five categories: financial ratings, customer satisfaction, affordability, customer support and transparency, and availability. Insurify updates ratings once a year or as more recent information becomes available.

    • Third-party financial ratings: Insurify uses data from AM Best, S&P, Moody’s, and more to compare insurance companies’ credit and ability to pay out future claims.
    • Customer satisfaction: To calculate this score, Insurify analyzed more than 28,000 customer reviews across 155 car insurance companies. We also consider third-party ratings from J.D. Power, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, and Trustpilot.
    • Affordability: Our data scientists analyzed more than 90 million real-time auto insurance rates from our partners across the U.S., as well as available discounts, to calculate an affordability score.
    • Customer support and transparency: This measures coverage options, ease of claims filing, and the insurer's transparency surrounding discounts, coverages, and claims process.
    • Availability and reach: Insurify scores availability and reach by identifying the number of states in which insurers offer coverage and company size by market share.

State Farm is our best overall insurer because it ranks highly for customer service and offers some of the best rates and multiple discounts. Its car insurance rates are well below the monthly national average, per Insurify data.

State Farm received the best customer satisfaction and insurance shopping experience ratings from consumer insights agency J.D. Power in 2023.[1][2] It’s widely available as the largest U.S. insurer by market share and has a below-average company complaint index, according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).

Pros

  • High rates of customer satisfaction

  • Rideshare insurance available

Cons

If you drive infrequently or only short distances, a pay-per-mile program like Nationwide’s SmartMiles could be a good fit. We chose Nationwide because it’s the most widely available pay-per-mile program and ranks higher than other usage-based insurers, like MetroMile and Mile Auto.

Nationwide’s example driver would pay $133 per month for a traditional policy but would pay $95 with SmartMiles, which includes a $60 base rate and $0.07 per-mile rate for 500 miles per month.[3]

Customer reviews are mixed, but it ranks third among large insurers for shopping experience and has a below-average company complaint index, according to J.D. Power and the NAIC, respectively.

Pros

  • Numerous discount and savings opportunities

  • SmartRide (for safe drivers) and SmartMiles (for low-mileage drivers)

More than Twice the Price!

I have been a Nationwide client for my cars, boats, and homes since 1973. Recently, I received a notice that the company is dropping us this fall for no apparent reason; no claims, always paid on time, 5-year-old metal roof, etc. Upset, I decided to drop my other policies as well. I was shocked to discover that for the exact same coverage, Nationwide has been charging us more than double! Despite their great service, and despite having recommended them to many other people, I obviously switched to Progressive. It seems that loyalty means nothing to Nationwide!

GEICO offers competitive rates, period. But its average insurance premiums for high-risk drivers are less than half the national average for that category, Insurify data shows. Drivers with an incident pay an average of $63 monthly for minimum coverage and $139 for full-coverage insurance.

GEICO can also file SR-22 or FR-44 forms with state motor vehicle departments on your behalf, and it offers numerous discounts that can further lower your premium. GEICO, the third-largest U.S. auto insurer by market share,[4] is available in all 50 states, offers multiple insurance products, and scores high for customer satisfaction and financial strength, making it a popular choice for auto insurance.

Pros

  • Good rates for good drivers, seniors, and young drivers

  • Accident forgiveness available

Cons

  • High rates for drivers with certain violations, like DUIs

  • No rideshare or new car replacement coverage available

Travelers’ competitive rates and student discounts make it a great choice for young drivers. Travelers’ rates for teen drivers aren’t the cheapest out there, but they’re still below the national average for that age group, at $163 for liability only and $352 for full coverage.

Teens can lower their premiums further with good student and driver training discounts, and families with teen drivers attending school more than 100 miles away can qualify for a discount. Travelers ranks highly for financial strength and received average scores for customer satisfaction, shopping experience, and complaints, according to AM Best, J.D. Power, and the NAIC.

USAA offers insurance products only to active-duty military members, veterans, and their families, but it has some of the cheapest rates. While some other insurers, like GEICO, offer discounts to military personnel, USAA is the only one that exclusively sells policies to military members. It’s especially competitive for good drivers and offers special discounts, like for living on a military base.

Average monthly rates for USAA car insurance are less than half the national averages, Insurify data shows. USAA scores well for customer satisfaction and shopping experience with J.D. Power. Customer reviews are mixed though,[5] and it has an above-average number of complaints with the NAIC.

Pros

NJM offers insurance products only in Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, but if you live in one of those states, NJM is a great choice. NJM consistently has some of the lowest rates, according to Insurify data, but that doesn’t mean customers sacrifice quality. Its average monthly rates are a third of the national average. How to find the best car insurance for you

Lifestyle and unique driver profiles factor significantly into what the best car insurance would be for you. These are some things to consider as you look for the right policy:

  • 7 Best Car Insurance Companies (June 2024) | Insurify (10)

    Coverage levels

The legally required minimum liability coverage differs by state, but insurance professionals generally recommend buying more than the minimum liability for greater financial protection. And if you lease or finance your car, your leasing company or lender will require you to have full coverage. Research to understand what you do and don’t need.

  • 7 Best Car Insurance Companies (June 2024) | Insurify (11)

    Discounts

Most insurers offer discounts for bundling policies, insuring multiple vehicles, driving safely, and more. Look for an insurer with discounts that apply to you. You may qualify for multiple discounts that could add up to significant savings.

  • 7 Best Car Insurance Companies (June 2024) | Insurify (12)

    Driving habits

Your driving record affects your rates, and whether you have a clean record or a history of incidents will inform which insurer is right for you. If you don’t drive much or very far, a pay-per-mile or pay-as-you-go car insurance policy might be the best option.

  • 7 Best Car Insurance Companies (June 2024) | Insurify (13)

    Location

Where you live affects your premiums. Factors like population density and accident, fatality, and vehicle crime rates can affect the price of car insurance. Regional insurers in your state may offer competitive rates and discounts, so it can pay to look locally.

  • 7 Best Car Insurance Companies (June 2024) | Insurify (14)

Why is car insurance so expensive?

Numerous factors, including the rising cost of repairs, more severe car accidents,[6] and increasingly extreme weather events, contributed to record losses for insurers. Regional legislation and insurance fraud may have also led to higher rates in New York, Nevada, and Florida, the most expensive states for car insurance, per Insurify data.

Car insurance is also becoming less affordable: Rates increased 638% more than wages in 2023, and low-income states were hit hardest, Insurify research shows. Drivers in Mississippi, the lowest-income state in the country, spend 3.4% of their income on car insurance, while Utah drivers spend 1.8%, according to an Insurify analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data.

With many factors influencing premiums, it’s a good idea to compare car insurance quotes to find coverage that fits your needs.

State laws require minimum liability coverage in every state but New Hampshire, and even then there are some financial requirements. You need to buy at least your state’s minimum coverage, but if you want more financial protection in the event of an accident or weather damage, you’ll need to purchase more coverage.

If you finance or lease your vehicle like most U.S. drivers, your lender will require full coverage. Drivers with rare or higher-value cars may want additional protection even if they own the car outright, because repairs will be more specialized and expensive.

Types of car insurance coverage

Here are some common coverage options so you know what you need and don’t pay for what you don’t.

  • 7 Best Car Insurance Companies (June 2024) | Insurify (23)

    Liability only

This covers bodily injury and property damage you cause to someone else. Every state but New Hampshire requires some amount of liability coverage.

  • 7 Best Car Insurance Companies (June 2024) | Insurify (24)

    Full coverage

This typically includes collision and comprehensive coverage in addition to liability insurance. Collision covers damage to your car in an accident, even if you’re at fault, and comprehensive covers damage to your car from non-collision incidents.

  • 7 Best Car Insurance Companies (June 2024) | Insurify (25)

    Uninsured/underinsured motorist

Uninsured motorist coverage pays for damage from hit-and-run accidents and protects you if the at-fault driver has no coverage. Underinsured motorist coverage protects you if the at-fault driver has too little coverage to pay for your injuries and damages.

  • 7 Best Car Insurance Companies (June 2024) | Insurify (26)

    Personal injury protection (PIP)

This typically covers medical expenses, lost wages, and funeral expenses for you and your passengers, no matter who’s at fault. If you live in a no-fault state, PIP may be part of your minimum coverage requirements.

  • 7 Best Car Insurance Companies (June 2024) | Insurify (27)

    Medical payments (MedPay)

This add-on helps pay for medical and funeral expenses for you and your passenger in an accident, even if you’re at fault.

  • 7 Best Car Insurance Companies (June 2024) | Insurify (28)

    Guaranteed asset protection (gap)

Gap insurance covers the difference between your outstanding loan or lease balance and your claim payout if your car is declared a total loss following an accident.

  • 7 Best Car Insurance Companies (June 2024) | Insurify (29)

    Accident forgiveness coverage

This insurance add-on can prevent your premium from increasing after your first at-fault accident.

State-minimum vs. full coverage

Car insurance ideally protects you financially when something unexpected happens, whether it’s an accident or a flood. The right coverage for you depends on your budget and financial flexibility, location, driving history, and type of vehicle.

If you practice safe driving habits, live in a less populated area, drive a paid-off vehicle, and have the assets to cover significant unexpected expenses, a liability-only policy could be a good option to save money. If you live in an area prone to natural disasters, lease or finance your vehicle, or live in an area with high accident or vehicle crime rates, then a full-coverage policy with comprehensive insurance will ensure you’re not paying out of pocket if a weather event damages your car.

Best car insurance FAQs

If you’re not quite ready to begin comparing car insurance quotes or to call an agent, here’s some more information to answer your questions and help you find the best car insurance.

  • What is the best car insurance?

Comparing quotes will help you find the best choice for you, but State Farm is our pick for best overall insurer for its competitive rates and excellent customer service. It ranks at the top in 26 states. American Family has 18 discounts, so you can qualify for more savings on top of its already affordable rates. If you’re a driver in the mid-Atlantic region, NJM has quality customer service and consistently low rates.

  • What is the cheapest car insurance?

The cheapest car insurance rates are typically for liability-only policies, but it’s still possible to find full-coverage rates below the national average. The cheapest car insurance companies are COUNTRY Financial, NJM, and Auto-Owners. Their liability-only rates start at $19, $33, and $37 per month, respectively. Qualifying for discounts will also help you get the least expensive rates.

  • Which company has the best car insurance for teens?

Travelers is a great choice for teen drivers on their own policy. Though some regional insurers offer more competitive rates, Travelers’ rates are still below the national average for teen drivers. Teens can further lower premiums with good student and driver training discounts.

  • Which insurer has the best car insurance for drivers with an incident?

Our editorial team chose GEICO Insurance Agency as the top insurer for drivers with an incident on their record. It’s widely available, scores well for customer satisfaction and financial strength, and has competitive rates for drivers with an incident. GEICO can also file SR-22 or FR-44 forms on your behalf.

  • What car insurance discounts should you look for?

Consider discounts whenever you’re comparing policies. Insuring multiple vehicles, having a clean driving record, being a good student, serving in the military, equipping your car with anti-theft systems, and more could earn you a discount. You could also save by bundling your home or renters insurance with your auto policy.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 90 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 50+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage

Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:

  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
